What is this all about?!

Tucked away in the dark crevices of the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin, Texas are nearly 1.5 million Mexican free-tailed bats. The largest urban colony of bats in the world! In early spring, this colony of flying mammals migrate from their winters in Mexico to call Austin home while the pregnant females prepare to give birth to their pups. During this time, locals and tourists alike can experience an event like no other where these bats emerge from the bridge and into the sky in search of their daily meal.

When can you see the Bats?

The typical season for bat viewing is from mid-March to the end of November when the temperatures are warm. The best time of the year is from August to end of September when both the mamas and their pups emerge together. The columns of bats are much more densely populated, creating the most spectacular sight.

What time of the Day do the Bats Emerge?

Typically, the first sight of bats occurs about 30-40 minutes before sunset. If there is unfavorable rainy weather, their emergence may be delayed. The bats usually fly out in waves, making it a several hour-long experience on a good night! It is best to arrive to your viewing location at least 30 minutes early to claim your spot.

Where Can you see the bats?

There are several ways to view this natural phenomenon, all of which provide their unique perspective. No option is a bad one. Just choose what is best for your family.

  • Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge – the most up close and personal option is on the Congress Avenue Bridge itself. Not only is it free, but it can also give you a front-row seat to the emergence. The best location on the bridge will be the southeast section. The only downside is this is the most popular option and thus can get very crowded. If you are hoping for the best seat, it is imperative to arrive early.
  • The Statesman Bat Observation Center – located on the southeast bank of Lady Bird Lake, and the corner of the Congress Avenue Bridge, is the Statesman Bat Observation Center. This is a prime location for viewing, offering grassy areas to lay down a blanket and chairs. There are also educational exhibits for the kiddos to enjoy while waiting!
  • Butler Bike and Hike Trail – prefer to get some exercise while taking in the breathtaking experience? Head to the Butler Bike and Hike Trail, a 10-mile-long stretch along Lady Bird Lake. If you arrive early, you may be lucky enough to find an open bench to sit at!
  • From the water (Lady Bird Lake) – there are several ways to watch this magical moment from the water – booking a boat tour, renting paddleboards or kayaks, or taking your own personal watercraft. The advantage of seeing the bats fly from the water is you are not restricted to one location. If you decide to go with one of the few bat watching boat tours, you will also receive a little education with your experience. The guides are also very knowledgeable on the habits of the bats and know what to look for in order to enhance your experience.

Is this a Family-Friendly Activity?

Absolutely! Especially if you have animal lovers in your family. Not only is it a great opportunity for the kiddos to learn about these fascinating creatures, but it is also a once in a lifetime experience. Again, be sure to pick how you plan to watch the emergence based on your family as you know them best. There will likely be some waiting around in anticipation of the first sighting. If you have active kiddos, choosing a spot that allows moving around may be best.
