How to Plan A Disney World Trip on a Budget

Picture this: You’ve just told your kiddos they’re going to Disney World. In their eyes, you have won the parent of the year award. After all the cheers, screams, and tears have dwindled, you sit down to start planning your magical vacation. Only to realize, “do we need to take out a second mortgage to afford this trip?” All of a sudden, the magic is sucked right out of you. Don’t worry, I have been there before. I am still somewhat there every time we plan a trip to Disney World! Fortunately, though, there are many ways to shave off some of that total cost with just a little bit of planning. Read on to learn more about the ways we plan a trip to Disney on a budget!

Determine your Budget Ahead of Time
First things first, decide what your budget will be. When planning your upcoming Disney trip, it is important to determine your maximum spending cost ahead of time. And if there will be any wiggle-room. There are a lot of add on options to enhance your Disney experience (such as Lightning Lanes, Dining Plans, etc.), and it is often times easy to be convinced why these add-ons are a great deal. However, if your budget is firm, knowing what that is early on can help with picking and choosing whether those add-ons make sense.

Souvenir costs can also quickly add up. It is hard to say no to something your kiddos are so excited about wanting to take home. Afterall, they are great mementos you hope they cherish! We always start our Disney trips with setting a souvenir budget and letting our boys know what that is at the start. This way, they know what to expect, which usually prevents any disappointment! Also, it throws a little education in there as they will need to keep track of how much they have spent!
Park Ticket options
Likely one of the biggest expenses for a Disney vacation are the park tickets itself. Fortunately, your ticket purchase is an area where you can definitely save some money in your Disney budget!
- The more park days you add to your trip, the cheaper the tickets will be. Of course, this is counter-intuitive since more park days equals more hotel and food expenses! However, if your trip already includes multiple days at the parks, this pricing model will at least help to alleviate some of the stress with your overall costs at Disney World!

Do you have flexibility in which dates you are able to travel? Disney World ticket prices change depending on day of the week and time of the year. Consider traveling during a slower time where ticket prices are not as high. Personally, we have found May and August tend to be some of the best times to visit!
- Keep an eye out for discounted tickets. Throughout the year, Disney World will offer multi-day tickets at sometimes a substantial discount. The only caveat here is these are usually valid during specific date ranges and often more last-minute deals. Other discounts often offered are a Military discount if you have an active duty or veteran in your family, as well as Florida Resident ticket deals.
If you will be taking advantage of a ticket promotion that requires proof of identification (such as the Florida Resident or Military discount), be sure you are prepared with the proper documents. You will be required to show this proof when picking up your tickets at Guest Services, and Disney is very strict on their policy!
- Look at options for bundling your tickets with your hotel accommodations. Disney World often times offers vacation packages where you can get more bang for your buck. Working with an Authorized Disney Vacation Planner can also provide you with a ton of support in choosing the right package for your family.

Considering Park Hopper tickets on your next Disney vacation? My personal suggestion is to skip this added expense. Visiting multiple parks in a day does require you to adhere to capacity limitations (which can happen during busy times of the year). You will also lose precious park time between the transportation and having to go through security again. However, if your Disney vacation is less than 4 days, and visiting all 4 parks is a must, then you may want to consider a park hopper ticket for part of the time. My suggestion would be to rank the parks in order of “must do” and purchase a park hopper day to visit those on the bottom of your list. This way you can visit all the parks but still stick within your Disney budget!
On-Site VS. Offsite HoteLS
The biggest question here is whether to stay on-site at a Disney resort, or at an offsite hotel. There are 3 hotel tiers at Disney World – Value, Moderate, and Deluxe. All offer superb service and amenities and come with unique theming. However, prices can be quite steep as you go up in tier. Value Resorts can also be pricier during the busy times of the year. Here are some things to consider when making your hotel decision:

How close do you want to be to the parks?
As with most other popular destinations, the further you stay from the main center (in this case Disney World), the cheaper hotel prices will be. If you don’t mind a 20-30 minute drive (or further), consider looking at hotels in Kissimmee or Celebration. And remember, Universal Studios and Seaworld are just north of Disney World, so you may see prices increase as you get closer to those parks.
What Will be your mode of transportation?
If you will not have a personal or rental car, and will be relying on public transportation, staying at a Disney World resort may be a better option. Each resort has complimentary bus transportation to and from all 6 parks (including the water parks) and Disney Springs. Some hotels are also located along the Disney Skyliner route, which is a fun way to get to Epcot or Hollywood Studios!
If an on-site hotel is not within your budget, consider staying at a Disney Good Neighborhood Hotel. These are off-property hotels that are “Disney Approved” accommodations for their quality, comfort, and service. They also tend to be a little closer to the parks, with most offering Disney concierge services and park shuttles. This is a great way to have some of that “pixie-dust magic” at a discounted price!
DO you prefer additional services and amenities?
All Disney World resorts are set up with the traveler in mind. Each resort will have on-site dining available, pools and other fun activities, a gift shop, and even self-serve laundry facilities. You may never need to leave the Disney World property! But above all else, all resorts of course come with that Disney magic! If these services are not important, then I would definitely consider an offsite location to save a few bucks.

If staying at a Disney World resort is a must, but you are having a hard time stomaching the higher hotel costs, consider staying at one of Disney World’s Value Resorts. They are a fantastic option for the budget traveler and are wonderfully Disney themed for the little ones.
Renting Disney Vacation Club Points
Disney Vacation Club is Disney’s version of timeshare points. Often times DVC owners will “rent out” their annual points if they are unable to use them all in any given year. Usually, prices for DVC resorts will be quite a bit less than what you will find booking through the Disney World website. This is a great option if you want to stay at a Deluxe resort, whether it be for the experience, amenities, or larger suite/villa rooms. The only sticking point is there is not a guarantee you will be able to secure a reservation with your resort or days of choice. There are also strict cancellation policies to consider. If this is an option you would like to explore, there are several websites that offer this service. I have not personally used this booking site, but Dave’s Vacation Club Rentals gets really great reviews.
Food Saving OPtions
For many Disney vacationers, eating their way through the parks is the highlight of their trip. Some even create a food budget all on its own! Purchasing food can quickly add zeros to your budget, if you do not plan accordingly. And if you are planning to purchase all your meals onsite, finding cost saving options is definitely a must if you need to keep within a budget. These are just a few tips that work well for us to keep those costs at a minimum:
- Eat breakfast in your hotel room while getting ready for the day, if you can. Of course, if a grocery store is not available to you, this would not be an option. But if you are able to get to one during your vacation, this is a great way to save time and save in your pocketbook!
- Bring into the parks non-perishable snacks, such as granola bars, applesauce pouches (for the kiddos), and nut/fruit mixes. These types of snacks are a great pick me up when feeling famished. And much better on the belly! If you have access to a grocery store, consider taking in a non-perishable meal such as PB&J sandwiches. We will usually bring with us enough food for a meal and will splurge eating onsite for either lunch or dinner.
- Use a refillable water bottle instead of buying disposable water bottles in the parks. Good for both the environment and your budget! To refill, most quick-serve dining will give you cups of iced water at no cost. I recommend this over refilling your water bottle with the fountain water – Florida tap water is notoriously unpalatable! We like the Owala Stainless Steel water bottle. It’s easy to carry, keeps liquids cold, and proven to be leak-free (by our boys who are constantly dropping them!)
- Consider eating at quick-serve restaurants instead of sit-down ones. While quality of food may not always be there, you can usually find prices at half the cost. It also cuts down on missing precious park time! Some quick-serve restaurants also offer Mobile Dining where you can order your meal in advance. Another time-saving perk! Check out some of our favorite quick-serve dining options.

Is experiencing a sit-down restaurant a must in your itinerary? Costs can vary substantially considering the type of dining, as well as if you are eating a-la-carte or indulging in one of Disney’s mouth-watering buffets. If you cannot stomach the cost of a dinner (pun intended!), look at doing a breakfast meal instead. Generally, costs are less, and some of the nicer establishments offer character dining during breakfast hours only (such as Ohana at Disney’s Polynesian Resort)!
- Definitely give into the Popcorn Bucket craze. It took us a few trips to Disney World before we caved and bought one. And it has been a game changer for us! While not the healthiest of foods, it is the perfect way to keep the kiddos (and adults too!) from whining of hunger, without busting your budget. There is an initial upfront cost to purchase the bucket (as of July 2026 it was $14.29), but it does come with an initial fill. And re-fills are only $2.49! Plus, they make for great souvenirs, and you can also use it again on future Disney visits!

Does your vacation planning not provide easy access to purchasing outside food? Consider purchasing a Disney Dining Plan. This is a great option for families who will be eating all their meals and snacks on-site at Disney World. There may be special offers available at the time of your booking, so be sure to check in with a trusted Disney advisor. The Disney Dining Plan is also a fantastic way to enjoy a few sit-down restaurants without paying an exorbitant cost. Some character dining restaurants are also available through this plan, making it an extra worth-it option!
Pack your Essentials
We have all been there before where you are on vacation only to realize you forgot something essential. Or the weather does not turn out as expected and you now need to purchase gear at a higher cost. In Florida this can very well be the case! Packing for the “what-ifs” can be helpful with keeping your Disney spending costs down. Especially if they are items that you may need to go on a search for in the middle of your vacation. While you can’t always prepare for everything, making a packing list with those “what-if’s” in mind can be a budget saver. I am always building off of old packing lists and now have a pretty solid list of essentials that we never leave home without when going to Disney World.

Take Advantage of included perks & Freebies
Disney Parks and Resorts are always considering their visitors and ensuring they have as magical experience as they can. My husband and I talk all the time how Disney knows how to get it right in so many ways. Taking advantage of these included perks will surely add a little extra pixie-dust magic, as well as magical savings for you budget! Here are just a few examples of “freebies” that Disney currently offers:
*Be sure to check the Disney World website ahead of time to see what experiences are currently available as it can be ever changing.
- Free Water Park Day on your check in day for Disney World Resort guests. Start your Disney vacation off right with a fun filled day at Typhoon Lagoon and/or Blizzard Beach. Typically, this offer is valid during the summer months.

- Enjoy the views from above on the Disney Skyliner. Take a break from the busy park days by enjoying a leisurely ride aboard Disney’s very own gondola. Be sure to stop by the Disney Caribbean Resort and Disney Riviera Resort to explore their grounds. The Skyliner also gives you access to Disney’s very own Boardwalk!
- Walk around Disney Springs to get a little taste of Disney World. Have a bite to eat, buy a souvenir or two, or just soak in the excitement amongst the crowd of Disney visitors. Check out Disney Spring’s event schedule ahead of time as they are always offering free entertainment.

- Kidcot Fun Stops at Epcot is a great way to keep your kiddos engaged if the World of Showcase is a bit dry for them. There are 11 stations throughout the countries where the little ones can do an art and craft. Once completed they will receive a sticker and postcard for the country. It is a fantastic way to keep the kids motivated, have a little geography lesson, and a fun souvenir to take home to show their friends!

- Watch an evening firework show from outside the parks. The Magic Kingdom fireworks can be seen for free from the Ticket & Transportation Center (consider timing it right to watch it from a ferryboat!). Or head to the Boardwalk to catch the Epcot fireworks. Kiddos too tired to stay up to watch the show? The Magic Kingdom fireworks can be found on-demand, allowing you to watch it from the comfort of your hotel bed! Our boys love winding down the evening watching this on the TV.
When it’s all said in done, yes, a trip to Disney World will still likely be more expensive than most any other vacation. However, with a little bit of time and effort in doing research, there are many ways to cut down the cost, keeping the magical experiences all within your Disney budget! And just remember, no matter how much or how little you are able to do, your kids will still consider you parent of the year!
